Mosey on Down to Moab
10 Desert Adventures in Utah
By Elissa Gilbert
7. Go to the movies, or rather, go where movies were filmed. Moab has been the setting for movies since the days of John Wayne, when the Colorado River stood in for the Rio Grande. The free Moab Museum of Film & Western Heritage (at Red Cliffs Lodge) has movie photographs and props including a dummy Thelma that rode over the cliff at the end of Thelma and Louise. Head to Dead Horse State Park to see where that scene was filmed, or pick up a guide to other film sites at the visitor center.
8. Sample the surprising taste of desert wines. There are two wineries in Moab; go for free tastings at Castle Creek Winery or Spanish Valley Vineyards & Winery off Hwy. 191.
9. Exercise your imagination. Cruise down the Colorado River at night with the Canyonlands by Night experience, where 40,000 watts of light play upon the cliff
face and form shadow pictures set to narration of the story of Utah. (This low-tech entertainment doesn't appeal to everyone, but those who enjoy it, really enjoy it!)
10. Search for dinosaurs. Not far from the petroglyphs on Potash Road, find footprints at the "Dinosaur Tracks" turnoff or follow the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail (13 miles from Moab on US191, with a 2-mile dit road to the trailhead).
