Autumn Hits a Homerun in New York

Cooperstown, N.Y., may be known for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, but families who visit in the fall will soon see that autumn glows bright in this quaint town. Tucked along the shores of Lake Otsego, history, art, culture, golf and, of course, baseball, co-exist in this unspoiled, rural setting.

When not taking in the sites, families can visit the Farmer's Museum. This living-history museum re-creates 19th-century rural life, where costumed interpreters practice the arts and trades of the period. Another historical stop is Fenimore Art Museum, which showcases the extensive collections of the New York State Historical Association (NYSHA). NYSHA's collections of fine, folk, decorative and Native American art are considered among the best in the country. Behind the museum, visitors will find a re-created 1750 Mohawk bark house. Here, children can learn firsthand about the lifestyle of the native peoples of North America. Throughout the year, both museums host fun-filled special events.
