Where to Enjoy the Colors of Fall from Coast to Coast

By Donna Smith and Shelly Hemig

In west Tennessee, the best time to view foliage usually begins around the third week in October running through the first week in November. Sourwoods, persimmons and sassafras are some of the first to change. Be sure to check out Shiloh National Military Park to experience and learn about the Civil War while viewing its spectacular show of fall color.

To find up-to-date information on peak times and locations before your trip call the Tennessee Fall Color Hotline at 1-800-697-4200, and visit www.tenntravelnews.com.

The Many Colors of Southwest Florida

Autumn along the Florida Gulf Coast? Of course! Big Cypress National Preserve and the Gulf Coast Everglades region in southwest Florida have Florida maples (called red maples or swamp maples by some) that turn golden yellow and brilliant red, and the bald cypress drops its leaves creating an interesting affect to the landscape.

Families can take in the scenery by driving the Tamiami Trail (US Scenic Byway between Naples and Miami); walking the new public hiking trails in the Florida National Panther Wildlife Refuge; and visiting the Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary with its 2.25 miles of boarding winding through an ancient bald cypress forest (Florida maples have been seen here as well).

The added benefit of viewing fall foliage in Florida is the breathtaking white-sand beaches. Fall is also the slowest time of the year for tourism, which means no crowds an better hotel rates. For information call 1-800-2-ESCAPE, or go to www.paradisecoast.com.
