Family Fun in the Heart of Texas

The Austin Children's Museum
A paradise for kids! The museum is designed to not only entertain but educate children through interactive play. Kids can run around more than 7,000 square feet and explore, build, pretend play and just have a good time. When we visited, it was Air Fair, which featured exhibits demonstrating the amazing powers of air. The museum also offers early childhood programs, birthday parties, camps, workshops and story time.

Mt. Bonnell
Looking for a beautiful view – and a little exercise? Then head to Mt. Bonnell, the highest point in the city and one of Austin's oldest tourist attractions. At 785 feet above sea level, this natural limestone formation is a great picnic spot or just a nice place to relax and take in the view of Lake Austin. That is, of course, after you climb the 100-step stone stairway leading to the top. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Though our days were full, we ended up only seeing a tiny amount of what this fun, family-friendly city has to offer. We did not get to tour the State Capitol (www.tspb.state.tx.us/spb/plan/tours.htm), see the Congress Avenue Bridge (home to more then 1.5 million bats that fly out at dusk), visit the Austin Nature and Science Center (www.ci.austin.tx.us/ansc) or float in the Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed swimming hole. But Austin is worth the drive, and there's always next month. So stay tuned!
