Austin, Texas
Family Fun in the Heart of Texas
By Donna Smith
The University of Texas
My son, though only in 7th grade, has already announced that he will attend the University of Texas, so exploring the school's campus was a must on our to-do list. Sprawling over 350 acres, the enormous campus is speckled with beautiful landscaping, interesting sculptures and is the home to two world-class museums, the Harry Ransom Center and the Blanton Museum of Art.
The focal point of the school is the 307-foot UT Austin Tower. The observation deck offers visitors a fabulous view of Austin and the sprawling campus. Tours are available by reservation.
Guadalupe Street, or "the strip" as it is known by the locals and students, runs right in front of the campus. The street is packed with tourists and college students and offers unique stores and quaint places to grab a sandwich or a cup of coffee. In one of the Texas-themed stores, we purchased a map of Austin that included a detailed version of the downtown, which was quite helpful in planning the rest of our day.
Pluckers
Two blocks away from campus is a restaurant that my son had to eat in. It's a college hangout that my son's friends told him was the place for chicken wings in Austin. If you weren't looking for it, you would not even notice this hole-in-the-wall off the beaten path. But once you step inside, you know why it's a favorite. We stuffed ourselves with four different kinds of wings (14 different types are featured on the menu, and our very friendly waiter, Thomas, told us about four more specials not listed), the best fried pickles we have ever eaten, fried sweet potato french fries and a salad to attempt to balance out the meal. (I forgot to mention a cup of their delicious tortilla soup that was sent over complimentary because our waiter overheard me mention I'd like to try it.) Thomas told us that Tuesday kids eat free, so we stopped by on our way home to eat there for a second time. We ordered extra pickles this time, and tried their El Guapo dip and chicken tenders.
