Boyne Mountain, Michigan
An Ultimate Family Vacation in the Midwest
By Elisa Ast All
The many accommodations at Boyne are spacious and comfortable. You can choose to stay in condos, villas or cabins surrounding the mountain. The newly constructed Mountain Grand Lodge is an absolute gem. Geared toward families, the lodge provides rooms that are more like homes, with living rooms, dining areas, kitchens and multiple bedrooms. Our three-bedroom unit had sweeping views of the mountain, so each morning we would wake up to the mountain and wish it goodnight at the end of the day.
The kids' bedroom was designed to look like a chalet, with adorable colors, bunk beds and a swinging door. The beds are comfortable and cozy, topped with down comforters that take the chill out of your ski-weary bones. It was hard to tell if the plasma TV was more popular than the gas fireplace it was placed above, since curling up in front of the TV in front of the fire became a great way to wind down at the end of each exciting day.
Boyne's on-site ski school, the Snow Sports Academy, is absolutely wonderful. They guarantee that you will learn to ski in one two-hour lesson! Adults can take individual or group lessons. Kids are grouped according to age and taken to their own area of the mountain where they can learn to ski at their own pace.
The instructors are seasoned professionals with a calm yet effective teaching style. Within one lesson, our three kids, who had never skied before, were under control and skiing down the bunny hill. Within two lessons, they were using the chair lift and skiing down a large beginner's hill.
