Capitalizing on Fun in D.C.
What to Do and See in Washington, D.C.
By Maria T. Olia
The War MemorialsSeveral war memorials are located within the Mall – each with a different feeling. The WW II Memorial is the newest of the war memorials and the grandest in scale. There's the stark simplicity of the black granite wall and etched names of the Vietnam Memorial. The Korean War Memorial features life-size bronze statues of American soldiers.
If you have time for only one presidential monument, make it to the Lincoln Memorial. Here's a great object lesson: Hand each of your kids a penny. Your kids know President Lincoln is "heads." Have your kids turn the penny over and show them "tails" – the Lincoln Memorial. Inside the Greek-temple-like structure there is the seated statue of President Lincoln. The words of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address are carved into the limestone walls of a side chamber and are worth reading out loud – especially if your kids are school age. The view from the steps across the reflecting pool to the Washington Monument is spectacular. The Lincoln Memorial is open until midnight and is exceptionally beautiful in the evening – it positively glows.
