Chicago Is Windy and Wonderful!
Revisiting Chicago's Magnificent Mile
By Belinda Clarke
The hotel's design philosophy is that of understated elegance, with furnishings reminiscent of stately English country homes. Rich fabrics, natural wood and spectacular Asian-influenced floral arrangements adorn the lobby and are complemented by design details such as 20-foot-high gilded ceilings and two-story floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the famed Magnificent Mile.
Guest rooms are classically appointed in understated elegance. Polished marble bathrooms offer everything from bathtubs with Michigan Avenue views to steam-free television screens and telephones that mute out surrounding sounds, offering the perfect sanctuary after a long day of shopping and sightseeing. In every room, an electronic console next to the bed allows guests to control every aspect of the room's environment, from the curtains to the humidity and temperature.
"The Peninsula Chicago offers a peaceful Art Deco-inspired retreat for visitors to rest their heads in one of our spacious and luxuriously appointed guestrooms, soak in a bathtub while watching TV or savor afternoon tea, accompanied by the music of a pianist and cellist, in The Lobby," says the hotel's resident manager, Andreas Holder. "We offer a wide variety of dining and entertainment options for guests who have come to the city to enjoy the wonderful sights and activities Chicago has to offer."
One of the reasons the hotel and retail industry continues to boom in Chicago is that there is always something new to do, regardless of when you visit. Regularly, there are new exhibits at the Chicago Art Institute, the Historical Society and the Field Museum. Even more exciting is the new Millennium Park, which was built on three square blocks of open lakefront and is expected to become one of Chicago's most visited public sites.
