Ski Bliss in New Hampshire

The Magic of Mount Washington Hotel and Resort

A Winter Play Land

Skiing is the main attraction for guests of the Mount Washington in winter. Bretton Woods is New Hampshire's largest ski area and has always had a family reputation. It's ski and snowboard terrain is pretty equally allocated among novice, intermediate and black diamond trails. Even my teens were challenged.

The Mount Washington Resort has tons of other winter fun activities. Many families enroll in cross-country beginner group packages – there are miles of trails with convenient warming huts along the way. Snow tubing (at an extremely reasonable $5 per hour) and free ice skating are conveniently on-site. Horse-drawn sleigh rides of the grounds are also available. And during holiday vacation weeks there's a supervised kids and teen program, as well as drop-in family movies and activities like bingo and sing-alongs. Several indoor pools are located throughout the property. Swimming in the heated outdoor pool at the Mount Washington Hotel amidst the snow flurries is an absolutely magical experience.

For more information on planning your getaway, check out The Mount Washington Resort's Web site.

No-ski Alternatives

For non-ski winter fun, here are some other family-oriented activities located within a short drive of the resort.

The Mt. Washington Cog Railway
Rt. 302, Bretton Woods, NH
1-800-922-8825

All Aboard! This scenic rail line, completed in 1869, still uses locomotives fired by coal and powered by steam. Open year round, the winter roundtrip ride takes an hour.

The Mt. Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center
2779 Main St.
North Conway, NH
603-356-2137

A child-friendly science center dedicated to the study of weather. Open Friday through Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Outlet Shopping

There are more than 200 outlet stores – including an L.L. Bean outpost – located along both sides of Rt. 16 in North Conway.
