Ski Bliss in New Hampshire

The Magic of Mount Washington Hotel and Resort

By Maria T. Olia

But to fully enjoy the Bretton Woods Resort experience, stay at the hotel. The Mount Washington is truly a grand Victorian masterpiece, so the numerous public areas – the lobby, the conservatory, the veranda and even the hallways are large and spacious. Here, the room rates may seem high, ranging from $130 to $270 per person per night in a standard room, but it's a MAP rate, which includes both a buffet breakfast and dinner each day at your choice of resort restaurants. The elegantly restored guest rooms run the gamut from smallish, standard rooms to deluxe rooms with working fireplaces to tower and family suites.

Dining Options – from Elegant to Pub-Style

As for dining options, a friend who has a vacation home in the area tells me that the dining room at the Mt. Washington Hotel is the place in the White Mountains to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary. The hotel breakfast buffet is served here each morning and you can dine on a four-course gourmet meal for dinner here as part of your MAP plan. But be sure to make dinner reservations ahead of time, and jackets are required for gentlemen – and encouraged even for young boys – in the evening.

There other more family-friendly dining options available too. One evening we ate at Fabyan's, a restored railroad station down the road (the resort shuttle will take youthere) and ordered "fun" food to share – ribs, nachos, chicken wings. Another night we went to Stickney's restaurant in the basement of the Mount Washington Hotel for the casual dinner buffet, which included a carving station and a seafood raw bar.
