Ski Bliss in New Hampshire

The Magic of Mount Washington Hotel and Resort

For our family, a ski vacation has to meet a lot of needs. My three teenage snowboard-shredding sons want to ski from first light through night ski. My novice skiing 8-year-old daughter is good for half a day of skiing. Tops. I'm a reluctant skier – my husband is totally anti-ski.

The Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods, N.H., offers a family-friendly ski vacation that's perfect for both the serious skier and those who prefer ski resorts. It's the kind of place where you may pay a little more, but you get a lot more. During our three-day-long weekend vacation, our family never left the resort premises. We didn't feel the need.

A Castle in the Woods

The Mount Washington Hotel is a historic landmark. "Oh yeah, we just talked about Bretton Woods in class," said my 15-year-old. The World Bank. The International Monetary Fund. The Gold Standard. Yeah. The Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference after World War II. It happened here.

The 200-room, red-tile roofed, turreted Spanish Renaissance-style hotel nestled at the foot of the White Mountains is the resort's signature property. But Bretton Woods also offers a variety of other accommodations – contemporary slope-side town homes, a cozy bed and breakfast inn and a budget-priced motor lodge. All guests receive a "passport" at check-in that allows access to complimentary amenities and entertainment resort-wide. And the resort is open year round. Summer activities mostly revolve around golf, tennis and other active mountain pursuits.
