The Breezy City on the Bay
Explore Romantic San Francisco
By C.J. Johnson
After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge a visit to Muir Woods is only a 10-minute drive away. These ancient redwoods with cool and inviting air are hauntingly quiet and beguiling. There are ample photo opportunities as you stroll through the many hiking trails.
Charging up the hills of San Francisco on a whimsical trolley car can be an act of courage. Clinging to the outer bars of the car, we felt the chilling breeze rearrange our hair. We were tempted to hold our breath and suck in our stomachs in order to avoid the mirrors of oncoming cars. It is a tight fit, but an exhilarating ride. Ding, ding! It is the only way to travel to the wharf.
Bargain hunters may want to invest in a CityPass. This booklet allows the patron to have unlimited rides on trolley cars and buses, enter the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, take a boat ride aboard the Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise and browse through the Exploratorium and Palace of the Legion of Honor. Patrons can also use the pass to visit the California Academy of Sciences and the Steinhart Aquarium. The ticket booklets are good for seven days. For more information check out www.citypass.com.
The WharfFisherman's Wharf offers a smorgasbord for the nose. Aromas of seafood, barbecue, flowers and beer were only a few of the odors that wafted by. There are numerous shops for humor seekers and trinket collectors, boutiques for those who crave perfume and adult shops for those with a tougher constitution. Within the Ghirardelli shopping center there are a few more upscale souvenir shops. Of course, chocoholics (like myself) will not be disappointed inside the two sweet shops.
