High Tech or High Fun?
Ways to Play in San Jose, California
By Amy Carey Bowman
Day 3: Thrills and ChillsSan Jose is lucky enough to be flanked by a number of amusement parks, including Paramount's Great America and Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park. Great America is located just north of San Jose in Santa Clara and is accessible by the light rail. While there are countless thrilling rides and shows for teens and adults, younger children won't be disappointed with the selection of children's rides. In addition, cartoon characters are available for hugs everywhere you turn. For the hotter months, Great America's water park, Boomerang Bay, is a great way to cool down. If you're visiting in the winter or spring, check the park's Web site in advance for operating hours.
Farther south in Gilroy, about 40 minutes from San Jose, is Bonfante Gardens. This park isn't home to as many thrilling roller coasters as Great America. Instead, Bonfante Gardens is a shady, family-oriented park with waterfalls, lots of vegetation and quiet, kid-friendly rides that everyone in the family can enjoy. You can even rent paddleboats or ride a train around the grounds.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium, located about an hour and a half away from San Jose on Cannery Row in Monterey, is a must-see if you're visiting the San Jose area, says Siguenza. Just a short drive down the beautiful California coast, the aquarium was recently recognized by a Zagat Survey as the nation's third-best family attraction. Your kids will love watching the sea otters flip and splash. They'll be talking about the shark exhibit and kids' Splash Zone, as wellas the touch pool, long after you've returned home.
