If You're Ever In North Carolina's Outer Banks...

If you're lucky, or smart enough, to find yourself on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there are two sites not to be missed.

Body surfing As you drive onto the strip of barrier islands you'll pass through Kitty Hawk, site of the Wright Brothers' first flight. A pilgrimage to the site is mandatory during your trip, and memorable for all age groups. You'll find a Visitor Center and National Park Service programs to attend for folks who like to explore the facts. And for those who to get actively involved, you can climb to the top of Jockey's Ridge sand dune and stand at the take-off location of that first airplane. For details go to http://www.nps.gov/wrbr. Big plans are in the works for the First Flight Centennial in 2003!

One hour and one island further south, everyone in the family can enjoy the variety offered at another National Park Service site, the Cape Hatteras Light House. If you're in good health, don't hesitate to climb to the top for a spectacular view. The assent is quite manageable and worth a little sweat. Be aware, though, children must be over 38 inches tall to make the trip, and can't be carried.

After the climb, a dip in the ocean will be welcome, and the park has a beautiful beach known for its great waves. Little ones can have lots of fun here, but need close supervision. Strong swimmers will love to brave the waves of the Cape on boogie boards, body surfing, or surf boarding.

Be sure to bring your camera along, sunscreen for the beach, and bug repellent for the nature trail. Find details at www.nps.gov/caha.
