Ocean City

Paradise Awaits in This Maryland Family Fun Spot

When my turn came, I sat on the edge of the boat with the parachute tossed out behind me. It caught the wind and in a moment, my body was lifted from the boat and high into the sky (400 feet high to be exact). It must be how a bird feels, floating above the world. I'm not sure I'd do it again, but it was fun to try at least once.

Of course, you can't go to Ocean City without strolling along its famous Boardwalk, with its amusement park, complete with an antique carousel, its beach shops, its salt water taffy and restaurants and nightclubs. Our friends always stop at Fisher's for a tub of caramel corn. For the kids, the pristine beach has a number of wooden climbing structures.

Dining, Ocean City Style

A visit to Maryland isn't complete without having crabs. There are plenty of places that sell steamed crabs, but if you like crab cakes (and I order crab cakes any time I see them on a menu), the best place to find them is at Nick's Original House of Ribs on 145th and Coastal Highway. Jack and Dylan say the ribs melt in your mouth, but the crab cakes are far and away the best I have ever had. Be prepared to wait, however. This restaurant is packed.

If you want to sample more than crab, The Wharf Restaurant, at 128th Street and Coastal Highway, serves a buffet with dozens of seafood choices. Paul Revere Smorgasbord, at 2nd Street and Boardwalk, is another all-you-can-eat restaurant with a more standard fare, but it has a dessert bar with a lot of fresh fruit to go along with the pies, cookies and ice cream.

Assateague Island

For a day adventure outside of Ocean City, Assateague Island is a seven-mile drive away. The town of Ocean City's Web site describes Assateague Island: "Just a few minutes from Ocean City lies Assateague Island, a natural barrier island with magnificent marshlands, beautiful beaches and miles of water for endless recreational activities. The island is home to Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park and the wild ponies made famous in the novel Misty of Chincoteague (Aladdin, 1991)." We didn't get a chance to go to Assateague Island on this trip, but it gives us something to look forward to on our next vacation in Ocean City, Md.
