Oregon's Newberry National Volcanic Monument

By Shelly Hemig

We had never seen a real, live porcupine before. The keeper had to really coax the pair out to their food dishes because they are shy and cautious. So it was a real treat to get to watch them lumber out of their shelters and start munching on some fruit. Since we had arrived at the museum so late in the day, we had to rush from exhibit to activity and back again. A plus at the museum was a play area for children with a puppet stage and animal hand puppets with which they could create their own show.

With so much more to see and do, we wished we were staying more than one night. As much fun as we had crammed into this day, we were still missing such attractions as the Newberry Crater, Paulina Peak, Paulina Lake, Benham Falls, Mt. Bachelor, Lava Cast Forest and more. But our boys were ready for dinner, bath and bed, and so were we.

We finished our day's exploring at a chain motel in nearby Bend, however, there were plenty of other accommodations, including resort areas and campgrounds.

Whether planning a one-day excursion or a weeklong trip, there is plenty to do and see in the high desert of Eastern Oregon.
