Mexico's Romantic Moon Palace
A Slice of Earthly Paradise
By Kendeyl Johansen
Still, the Beach Palace is within walking distance of La Isla Shopping Village with its rollicking nightlife, and it's a great option for families or couples seeking a more affordable, faster-paced vacation. Both Palace resorts offer popular kids' clubs.
In addition to the Beach Palace, Lars and I wanted to visit Xcaret, a Mayan-themed ecological park. Donning lifejackets and floating down a river through underground caves sounded fun.
And it was. We soon found ourselves bobbing along on a gentle current through amazing caverns illuminated by natural skylights. The crystal-clear water allowed perfect views of fossilized coral, and we'd sometimes emerge to float through an untouched jungle. And Xcaret offers 24 other attractions, including a night show with 200 plus performers. Lars and I are seasoned travelers (Bangkok, Rome, Buenos Aires), but we agreed that this eco-park was one of our most amazing experiences.
The Moon Palace wasn't flawless. We had expected a more extensive nightlife from a resort of this size (2,031 rooms). And for some reason there was excessive seaweed in the ocean – quick dunks were fine, but vigorous swimming was unpopular. Still, neither problem was daunting, as we could hop the shuttle to the clear-watered Beach Palace, which was close to plenty of nightlife.
Overall, Lars and I highly recommend the Moon Palace, and we plan to return. The trip refreshed our relationship and provided plenty of relaxation and fun. And when life at home gets hectic I visualize "our" beach spot under the palms, and it restores my inner peace and makes me smile.
