Lone Mountain Romance
Getting Away from It All in the Montana High-Country
By Johnathon Allen
Those couples who like to spice up their love life with a little adrenaline can cruise 15 minutes up the road and hit one of the nation's premiere downhill skiing areas: Big Sky Resort. The resort boasts 80 miles of runs, 4,350 feet of vertical and an average annual snowfall of 400 inches.
No amorous excursion would be complete without exquisite food, and LMR offers a wide variety of delicacies. Its phenomenal gourmet menu, which is described by Chef T. R. Romagnuolo as "New American Ranch," features traditional and regional specialties including beef tenderloin, fresh trout, pasta, seafood, elk, lamb, bison and pheasant. Dinner is served in the ranch's dining lodge – a beautiful log building with a neuvo-rustic ambiance, elk antler chandeliers and a massive stone fireplace.
To cap off the ultimate romantic vacation, guests can ride back in time via horse-drawn sleigh to a remote cabin where a theme dinner is prepared on an old fashioned wood-fired stove. The meal is served by lamplight, and entertainment is provided by a singer/guitar player who performs songs reminiscent of the gone, but not forgotten, American West.
"The sleigh ride and dinner are magnificent," Boswell says. "It was riding in the sleigh that we came to realize why they call the place 'Big Sky.' There are more stars overhead than your mind can register, and the Milky Way looks as if it were painted into place."
The nearest major airport to Big Sky is in Bozeman, Mont. It is served by Northwest, Sky West and Horizon Airlines. Couples should arrive during daylight hours so they can enjoy the drive through the awe-inspiring Gallatin River Canyon.
