So Green, So Close
Golfing in Indiana
By Sally Campbell Grout
Sure, Purdue University is known for teaching and training some of America's finest astronauts, scientists and engineers, but it's also a great place to have some fun. Case in point: The Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette is the site of two 18-hole, championship courses.
The Ackerman Hills course, with its hilly, forested terrain and narrow fairways, is the more traditional, manicured course. The Kampen Course, designed by the environmentally-friendly and legendary designer Pete Dye, is truly unique. Featuring nearly 7,000 trees, six ponds and 12,000 wetland plants, the course is as friendly to wildlife as it is challenging to players. It fulfills Dye's dream of a course that serves as a living laboratory for environmental researchers and students. For more information, call 765-496-3844.
There are weekends when you play 18 holes and then head home to wash the car and mow the lawn. Then there are true weekends where golf is the catalyst to 48 (or more) hours of fun. Those are the kind of weekends you have in Hamilton County. (Remember: You can even have them in the middle of the week!)
In Hamilton County, which is just north of Indianapolis, choose from nine golf packages including four challenging courses and accommodations at eight participating hotels. Not only are the fairways fine, you're near some of central Indiana's most entertaining attractions including Hamilton County's own Conner Prairie. For more information, call 800-776-TOUR.
