So Green, So Close
Golfing in Indiana
By Sally Campbell Grout
– you can use the slightly shorter Club Run as an 18-hole warm-up, and move up to the slightly longer Walnut Creek, both in Marion. Or start big and use the shorter course as a "cool down." Both courses are challenging and take advantage of the area's hills, forests, water and flatlands. Of special note: Club Run's historic 1840s Greek Revival clubhouse. Recently restored, it was once used as an Underground Railroad site. For more information, call 800-998-7651.
Here, the weather always cooperates. Open 12 months a year, the Golf Dome in Fort Wayne allows you to improve your stance, your swing and your putting even if it's hailing. While the Golf Dome isn't a traditional "course," it does offer a 40-station indoor driving range, a 30-station outdoor driving range and a PGA golf pro on staff who's sure to provide some insight on how to lower that score a notch or two. Family members who aren't quite as interested in playing below par can enjoy the game room, moonwalk, batting cages and 18-hole indoor putting course. For more information, call 260-432-8783.
Here's some must-know information that appeared in a 2001 issue of Golf Digest magazine: Coyote Crossing, located in West Lafayette, was the magazine's No. 1 one pick in Indiana and No. 7 nationally for Best New Affordable Public Course.
Designed by Hale Irwin, Coyote Crossing showcases one of Irwin's beliefs as a designer – that a course should incorporate the existing environment. So while they work at staying below, at or only slightly above par, players can enjoy the open meadow, mature forests and wandering Burnett's Creek. For more information, call 765-497-1061.
