A Sporty Celebration

Did you know Santa can rappel down a 300-foot rock? He's got to get in shape to get down those chimneys somehow!

During several Saturdays in December you can see the jolly old man prepare for the big night by rappelling down the 5-million-year-old Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock Park just outside Asheville. Then your family can take a trip up "The Chimney" yourself. A 26-story elevator drops visitors at the top where you'll be rewarded with an amazing 75-mile view.

Don't let Santa's athleticism outdo you. You can hike one of the park's five hiking trails, which range from easy to strenuous, and you may even come across the amazing 400-foot waterfall. The park also offers guided hikes and a nature center with exhibits on the park's flora, fauna and geology.

Admission is $12 for adults and $5.50 for children 4 and over. Children under 4 are free. Admission includes parking, all activities and all-day access to the park. Log on to www.chimneyrockpark.com for further details.

No matter what your idea of holiday fun, Asheville's got the experience for you. Before you know it, you'll be dreaming of sugarplums, singing holiday carols and wishing this time of year lasted just a little bit longer.
